Tongli is a town in Wujiang County, on the southern outskirts of Suzhou and about an hour drive from Shanghai. With a history of over 1000 years, Tongli has only recently become a tourist attraction. Its chief claim to fame is a system of canals reminiscent of Venice, Italy.

Because Tongli is a waterside town and the water quality is good, so drinking tea has been very popular. Before the Anti-Japanese War (1937 – 1945), there were about 20 Chinese teahouses in Tongli. They all built by the side of the rivers for the convenience of taking water. Meanwhile, the history of Tongli has been closely related to Chinese classical gardens. At present, the UNESCO has listed Tuisi Garden in Tongli town in the World’s Cultural Heritage, and Tongli town is also applying for join in this list. Nowadays, there are many media coming Tongli for their film shooting, so Tongli become a big attraction in China tour.

In a water town, bridge always plays an important role in people daily life. There are about 49 bridges in Tongli, in which Taiping, Jili, Changqing bridges are most famous. Exquisite and simple, Taiping Bridge was built in 1747 during the Qing dynasty. Changqing Bridge, also named Guangli Bridge, was rebuilt by Xiezhen in the Ming dynasty.

Jiayin Hall in Tongli town was established in the traditional style although it was built in the 1910′s. It was where a famous scholar Liu Yazi lived in his early years. The other is Jiaben Hall, built in the Late Qing Dynasty. Both halls have 4 rows and 3 bays. On the beams are fine carvings. Over a winding river near the two halls are three ancient bridges named “Peace”, “Luck” and “Glory” in an arch or flat shape.

Tongli is also rich in culture. In the long run of its history, it was once famed for its achievements in the imperial examinations and has produced famous Confucians and notables. About 40 stone tablets of different periods have been well preserved and a quite number of its streets and alleys are named after the official titles such as Zhuangyuan Street, Tongzhi Street, etc.
