Reed Flute Cave known as “the Palace of Natural Arts ” is located in the northwest of Guilin City , 5 kilometers away from the center of the city. It is a cave on the southern shoulder of the Guangming Hill (Bright Hill) and is one of the most extraordinary scenic spots in Guilin .
Ironically, the most extraordinary scenery Guilin has to offer is underground, in this cave; if you see nothing else try not to miss it since the cave is a bit like a gaudily lit version of Journey to the Center of the Earth. At one time the entrance to the Reed Flute Cave (Ludi Yan) was distinguished by clumps of reeds used by the locals to make musical instruments, and hence the name. Inside you enter a “palace of natural art” or an “abode of the immortals” (though how immortal you would remain living in a damp, dark cave…)
With its location five kilometers northwest of the downtown of Guilin, the Reed Flute Cave is a brilliant cave marked on almost all travel itineraries. The cave got its name from the verdant reeds growing outside it, with which people make flutes. Inside this water-eroded cave is a spectacular world of various stalactites, stone pillars and rock formations created by carbonate deposition. Illuminated by colored lighting, the fantastic spectacle is found in many variations along this 240-meter-long cave. Walking through the serried stone pillars, tourists feast their eyes on changing spots, feeling they are in a paradise where the Gods live.
While walking through the cave, visitors feel like they are being transported to different environments. Some sections seem like a forest of crystal trees, while others seem like underground mountain ranges and even cities. The strange formations can sometimes seem unworldly. Many of the formations have taken on recognizable shapes of mythological creatures, or natural images. There is one formation that even looks like Santa Claus with his sack on his back. Due to the darkness of the cave, it is quite difficult to get a photograph that can express the same feeling as actually being there.

GUILIN has been famous since Tang times for its scenic location among a host of gnarled, two-hundred-metre-high rocky hills on the Li River, down which you can cruise to the village of Yangshuo. Despite being prone to tourist-driven inflation and hard-sell irritations, the city is an attractive place to spend a day while organizing a cruise downstream, with plenty of well-designed landscaping, shady avenues and rocky parkland.

In recent decades, although development and exploding tourism are changing the face of this beautiful city, Guilin has remained one of the greenest and scenic cities of China.
The wonderful scenery of “thousand mountains wreathes are wild to sign, a water embrace city to flow” draws an idea with the poetry of “the city is in the painting, the painting is in the city”, is exactly the true portrayal of the charming Guilin.
Unlike most of the fast developing cities with skyscrapers, Guilin keeps its buildings relatively low because the people here do not want their beautiful peaks to be dwarfed.
